4th of July

This week at the cabin has been wonderful. My dad has gone fishing every morning this week and supposedly they have caught tons of fish every time. My mom has been reading and relaxing whenever she hasn’t been cooking up a storm for 13 people every meal. My nieces and one of their boyfriends has been playing this crazy game called Animal Crossing non stop. The interesting thing about this game is that it is played in real time, based on an internal clock in the game cube… so last night at 7pm we got to watch the ‘fireworks’ on the game.

I’ve just been doing a lot of reading. I finished In Search of Grace, a really interesting book about this woman’s journey through America’s religions. It is such a great book because she bring to life an ‘outsiders’ account of what it is like to step into the many religions in America. If you’re not careful you find yourself condemning ideas and practices in other religions which might look and feel very similar to your own to and ‘outsider.’

If Christianity as a whole was only more widely known for ‘practicing what you preach’ it might actually reflect it’s ‘founders’ intentions not to mention be a viable ‘religion’ to those multitude of ‘searchers’ out there. And by ‘out-there’ I mean next door.

If there is anything I have realized about my own spirituality it is that I am lazy. And I don’t mean in an “Earn your way to heaven” kind of way. I mean it in a “it is in our lives, and not our words that our religion must be read” kind of way as Thomas Jefferson put it. “Surely it is God who saves!” but surely it is us who could act like it. Surely we are the ones he wants to love on and who can love others as He loved us…

I’ve also been reading Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther. I think I’ve ‘solved’ the problem with the church (said tongue in cheek). It seems like we always get in trouble when we spend more time studying and thinking and discussing theology than God’s Word. And it seems like every reformation has begun with someone or someone(s) going back to reading the bible and discovering that us humans have turned to our own understanding over and above God’s Word.

I could be wrong, but if you know me, you know I’m lying and that I actually believe I’m right about this.

Anyway, it’s time to go enjoy the cabin…
