I am getting sick of going viral

Think about the fact that with this change, there is no reason you couldn’t promote content, videos and contests to LinkedIn’s audience even if you have a relatively small number of  followers. Going viral on LinkedIn may provide more long-term business benefit than the short-term page view lifts we see with other channels.

Uggh.

Personally, I am looking forward to people developing an immune response to virus’ as soon as possible, so everyone can stop trying to infect customers with a tendency to click, and instead provide customers with a reason to love.

5 Secrets of Highly Effective Twitter Users

There’s no way to guarantee success with a Twitter campaign, but you can stack the odds in your favor by following some simple tips to vastly increase your effectiveness. Here’s how to get the most bang for your tweet…

You can go read their suggestions. (I might add, “6. If you write articles about twitter, include a link to your twitter account.” But, that is just me. I’m sure Inc. didn’t give Minda Zetlin a say in the matter.)

Personally, I’d stick with:

  1. follow whoever you want – there is no “follower strategy”
  2. listen
  3. be helpful

And a bonus biased comment: twitter is social, social is relationships, if you need a strategy to your relationships something is broken.

Apple Support Communities – Discussions aren’t Social?

“Apple Support Communities brings together thousands of Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad users from around the world to discuss Apple products and topics,” the official introduction reads. “Apple Support communities provides a wealth of information about your favorite Apple hardware and software products to help you get the most out of your purchase. And, in the spirit of community, you can also help other Apple Support Communities’ users by answering their questions.”

This announcement triggered a mini-avalanche of undigested thoughts for me:

  • Are discussions not social?
  • Can you call any website that includes an avatar, a profile page, and a couple of widgets a community? A social network?
  • Is every new feature this year going to be called a social network?

I definitely don’t intend for these questions to be a sarcastic attack. I do not think we have come up with good answers to those questions yet.

People and Ideas Matter (now, what’s the business plan?)

I am intrigued by a post that has garnered quite a discussion over at Chris Anderson’s blog on The Long Tail:

The short head will be human, the fat middle social and the long tail algorithmic.

We are running directly into a future where relationships will be more valuable than information. In business, it doesn’t matter what you know, it matters who you know. In the arts, your product isn’t worth anything, but interaction with your audience is priceless. In education, knowledge is a click away, but the classroom is a unique space where interaction and innovation can flourish.

How are you deriving and investing value from/in your relationships?
