Beer and Guitars

Tonight was great. I got to hang out with my good friend stan at the house and drank some good Schell’s beer. After a long discussion about church, we bust into a spontaneous jam session on the couch. It was glorious. For me, heaven will be one big jam session, in which I will FREAKIN ROCK (unlike now).

I should back up a little bit. Stan and I have been friends for quite a while now. I knew of him in college, that is to say I didn’t like him in college. You see, he was the super senior guitar god at Concordia, St. Paul. And I was this cocky freshman who thought he was the best guitarist this side of the radio. Anyway, to make a long story short, I didn’t understand why everyone thought this guy was so great, until I got to know him. He is a great guitarist, and a great person.

When I was working at Emmaus in St. Paul, he and I did this alternative worship thing. It was called 11-10 and was basically an outreachy kind of thing that existed to be a “safe place for people to search for God whether they had known Him their whole life, or never met him.” And I think it was that. I hope it was that. (You’d have to ask some of the people who leave comments here.) Although, if I was to be completely honest, it was what I wanted… no needed church to be.

Anyway, he came to woodbury lutheran first, as the music leader for Genesis (modern worship services) and I followed him a few months after as interim youth staff. So now we share an office (very dangerous) and keep each other sane in the crazy soap-opera world of church work. The point of this story is that he is the most generous person I know, and I only hope to pay him back someday for all the kindness and food and beers he has shared with me.

Good times.

Now, I’m off to bed to read The Seven Story Mountain and wait for my wife to come home from work.
