I am neck deep in a yak shaving session again. This usually happens when there is something I want to learn (today: python) and I end up with too many firefox windows open to articles and tutorials, then throw in one other task not directly related that keeps pulling my focus away (today: tweaking files in iTunes). Then, in the midst of it all, I decided I wanted a couple stickers for my laptop: python, open source, make trade free, microformats, technorati, and emacs. (Not to mention that I’m still waiting for the stickers to come out for my guild.) And now you see how I arrive at ‘neck deep’ so quickly.
I need to draw a line in the sand and make a plan. I think this is how I will this situation in the future:
- del.icio.us everything that is open, and close as I go, reading nothing
- Pick the best place to start my thread
- Set up a few milemarkers: places I want to be at certain timestamps
- Draw some circles around things: set aside or immediately deal with email, music, or other unrelated task–in other words, get it out of my mind either actively or passively
- Ok, go
