As regards Christianity, two things put me off. First, the churches just then were beginning to desert the city in droves, fleeting to the suburbs following their middle-class constituents. Second, I was turned off by the decidedly ungenerous orthodoxy of some fundamentalist students anxious to speed my conversion to their understanding of Christianity. Their answers seemed too pad, their submissions to God too ready. It seemed to me that too easy submission was but a façade for repressed rebellion. I suspected that, deep down, many of these students were hostile.
