How I use LinkedIn

TL;DR – My LinkedIn connections are people I know well enough to introduce and personally recommend.

I realize that many people use LinkedIn as a tool to grow their professional networks, meet new people, “bookmark” attendees they met at conferences, or build as many connections as possible. And that is fine. It just does not work for me.

A core benefit of LinkedIn is the ability to see and introduce people who are two degrees away. All our connections are visible to people several degrees away. So, for me, it only makes sense to connect with people I feel confident personally and professionally recommending to someone else.

That said, I am delighted when people I don’t know reach out through LinkedIn because I do love to meet new people, deepen relationships with acquaintances, and help folks out however I can.

I am simply asking that we do those things through other channels first, and then connect on LinkedIn.

So, what are you up to now?

My Pending Invitations inbox on LinkedIn has been growing out of control lately. And, while I am doing my be to follow up with everyone, I wanted to try and clearly explain why I rarely accept invitations right away.
